Want to Upgrade Your Small Kitchen?

November 28th, 2009

Like many people, you may find that you want to do what you can to upgrade your kitchen. The only problem is, it’s kind of small and there isn’t a lot of room to add new things, like that kitchen island you’ve been lusting after for years! There are a few alternatives for you though, that will work marvelously in your small kitchen, and give you all the luxury and utility you want with a kitchen island.

1.  Get a Kitchen Cart. Not just any kitchen cart mind you, but one with a butcher block top surface and cabinets underneath. You can find kitchen carts that have a great food prep wooden top so that you can get the meal preparation functionality that you would want with a custom island. You can also get these carts with spacious cabinetry, so that you can store you extra cooking utensils, cookbooks, or bakeware in there. The best part about kitchen carts is that they are on wheels, so you can move them around to wherever you want to use them, and tuck them away when you aren’t using them. Kitchen carts are like a mobile kitchen island, and work well in small spaces!

2.  Try a Kitchen Work Table. If you don’t have the floor space for a built-in kitchen island, you may find that kitchen work tables are more up your alley. Kitchen work tables usually don’t come with all the cabinetry and storage of a kitchen cart or island, but they do give you a great butcher block surface to prepare food on. Kitchen work tables usually stand on 4 legs, giving you ample floor space to walk around, so these tables are a great solution if you want the function and luxury of a butcher block without taking up too much space in your small kitchen.

3.  Get a Butcher Block. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to put your kitchen cart, work table, or butcher block in the center of the kitchen floor. If you have the perfect little nook that a butcher block could fit in, don’t be shy about finding one to fit snugly in there. Just make sure to get EXACT measurements of the space, because nothing would be more annoying than getting a kitchen island home and finding it’s a half inch too big to fit in the nook! Butcher blocks will give you that great cutting and food preparation surface you want, and they can be placed in compact spaces nicely with a little planning.

So even if you have a small kitchen and a limited amount of floor space, you can get the dream kitchen you want complete with an island. Whether you decide on a kitchen cart, kitchen work table or butcher block to put in your kitchen, you can find the perfect one to upgrade your home!
