Tips on Taking Out Your Old Bathroom Suite

March 7th, 2010

A new bathroom suite looks great but what about the old one, would you know how to correctly remove the old bathroom suite. Hopefully in this article it will give you some guidance on how to remove that old suite to make way for the new.

Before you get going

Normally when you are removing a complete bathroom suite then the bathroom tiles are normally changed as well. First on the list is to take all of the tiles off and clear the area of all debris. You should then be left with the bare shell of the suite, for space and safety you should just have your essential tools which are to include a bucket and sponge!

Removing the Bath

Before anything else you need to turn off the water supply both hot and cold to the bath, then turn both taps on to allow any water left to drain out. Take the side panel of the bath off, these mostly just use clips that pop off or are screwed in. Next you need to take apart the water connections coming in and the drain from the bath. If your bath is in a corner or sat against a wall there may me some fixings that need undoing and probably some mastic that you will need to cut through with a sharp blade.

Taking out the wash basin

Make sure the water is turned off as you did with the bath, turn the taps on to drain any water in the pipes and then you can disconnect the taps and drain pipes. You will then need to remove the basin from the wall if this is the type of basin that you have being careful as the basin can be a fairly heavily part of the bathroom suite.

Removing the Cistern

First job again is to isolate the water system either by a valve close to the cistern or the main stopcock. Flush the toilet to empty the majority of water from the cistern. Then a pipe wrench is require to take out the overflow pipe, you will then need to disconnect the pipe that flows when the toilet is flushed. Next is to take out the water feed to the toilet cistern. The cistern will then just need to be taken off of the wall and lifted away, you may want to have some old towels around for this just to mop up any water left in the bottom of the cistern.

The Toilet

Almost done and ready for your new bathroom suite. The toilet is last, older houses may have the toilet concreted to the floor which will require you to get the old hammer and chisel to take it out but most moder homes the toilet is simply bolted to the floor undo the bolts give it a wiggle to free it from the soil pipe and lift out. It is advisable at this point to put old cloth into the soil pipe preventing sewer smells filling the bathroom.

Remove any remaining pieces of the lavatory from the soil pipe, taking care not to damage the pipe itself. If the soil pipe does get broken, you will need to cut it back to a square end. You will need to hire a chain cutter to do this.

Your bathroom is then ready for your lovely new bathroom suite.
