Do you know what that cabinet unit is called that sits in your bathroom and supports your sinks and the faucets? Most people simply refer to it as the “sink,” but the unit itself has a unique name. Have you ever asked your spouse to get something from the bathroom and directed them to the bottom right hand corner of the vanity? Most likely the answer is no. Very few people actually refer to their sink unit as a single sink or double sink vanity. If, however, you ever need to go shopping for one, it is very important to know this verbiage!
There are two common types of vanities: ones that go in your bathroom and ones that go in your bedroom. Most people are familiar with the bathroom version because everyone has a one or two sink unit with a countertop, cabinets, and drawers. The bedroom version does not have a sink attached and are much more commonly used by women then by men.
If you are remodeling your bathroom, the vanity is the most important decision you will make. It defines the look of the entire room so you need to make sure that it is something that you like and will stay in style for years to come. As amazing as that polka dotted vanity may seem at the moment, you will either have trouble selling the house in the future or you will soon grow to hate it yourself! Try to pick out something in a neutral color with a modern, simple design. If you want to add bold elements, do so with less permanent additions such as towels and decorations. You can easily change these items later when you are ready for a new bathroom look.
The second type of vanity is slightly less common; it sits in the bedroom and works perfectly as a make-up counter. If your bathroom suffers from having only one sink, a bedroom vanity is a great solution. This unit has several shelves and drawers for easy and organized storage and it also has a large mirror. When people are rushing around in the morning, it is much easier to have your own space to get ready!
