Kitchen Countertop Remodeling

March 6th, 2010

Kitchen countertop remodeling may sound like a low priority remodeling idea, but it is well proven that if people don’t like the look and feel of their kitchens, they will not cook as much in them and will be far more inclined to dine out!  Given our current economic climate, we all need to be dining in more.  Fortunately, there are several options when it comes to countertop remodeling.  The old Formica countertop of the 60’s was replaced with the tile ones in the 70’s and then came along the granite countertops of the 80’s and the hybrids of the 90’s.  Clearly, the contracting world has been busy in the kitchen!

Countertop remodeling has enjoyed a great deal of attention since it is often the first thing seen by visitors and the primary place of work for the family cook.  If the family plans to eat in the kitchen, it is even more important to choose a countertop material that will look nice.

It is equally important that a kitchen remodeling project not stop at countertop remodeling, but also include some consideration for other design elements in the kitchen such as cupboards and wall paint that can accentuate the look and feel of the new countertop.  Also, the location of countertop appliances and the selection of sinks and faucets can add to or detract from the countertop remodeling work.  Fortunately, the design of this work can be done without much difficulty, though for the installation work, you will certainly need another person to help.

Kitchen countertops can be made out of a variety of materials, ranging from laminate to marble or granite. Interestingly, each and every material has its pluses and minuses.  Many people base their choice of countertop material on the initial cost and the ongoing maintenance required to upkeep their investment in their countertop remodeling project.  For example, Formica and tile are known to chip easily but not stain, whereas granite and marble are known to not chip but can easily stain without proper treatment.

The overall design of the kitchen should also be considered in a countertop remodeling project. Ideally, the refrigerator, main sink, and stove should be arranged in a way that they form an equilateral triangle. Since these are the most often used areas, it is important to be able to easily walk from one to the next with a countertop somewhat in the middle.  With the countertop in the middle, it can be useful for placing cold items taken from the refrigerator, hot items taken from the stove, and stacking dishes beside the sink, as well as providing room for food preparation.

In addition to the type of countertop desired for the remodeling project, there is fortunately also a wide range of colors to choose from.  In fact, there are about 100 different granite colors, so it is not likely that the homeowner will be limited by his choice of material.

For anyone who has been thinking about doing a countertop remodeling project now is a very good time. All the background information can be found on the Internet, including prices, customer reviews, and expert opinions.  Countertop sellers and installation contractors are also eager to sell product at a great discount.  So make your countertop remodeling project a 2010 goal after doing your homework.  It will brighten the central point of focus in your home.
