Note: Be sure to lay down drop cloths to cover counter tops, floors and appliances that you were unable to move. The best job will be accomplished with appliances removed to gain easy access to all parts of cabinets. Use newspaper along with 1″ masking tape to cover counter tops, edges, and anything else that you need to protect when applying primer and finish. A very cheap way to be safe.Believe it or not, if you’ve been following this series of articles, most of the hard work is done. Its all downhill from here. So, lets continue and you’ll soon see your new cabinets. Now that your cabs and doors are clean and sanded, your going to get out a 3″-4″ roller, and the primer. Now its time to start priming Everything that your going to put your new finish on. Start with the Inside of the doors( if your going to do them). Find an area, garage, patio, spare room, anywhere you can lay down your doors on some plastic drop cloths, outside down. Would be Ideal to use some Dixie cups or something you may have around the house, to raise the doors slightly so they’re not flat on the floor, will help not to stick to drop cloth. Know using your roller, begin to roll a light coat of primer on the inside. Continue until all the doors insides and edges are covered. If you can see through the primer, that’s OK. Just be sure its covered. Now work on the cabs while these dry because you’ll have to turn them to prime the outside later. Now, after all the insides of the doors are primed, move on over to the cabs and proceed to prime the insides, just as you did with the doors, just a light coat is good. Remember to start on the uppers first, then move on down to the lowers. After you finish priming the cabs inside, you can now start to prime the outside of the cabs. As you did the inside, a light, even coat of primer is all you need. Uppers first, and don’t forget under the uppers. If your cabs are made of poor quality( particle board as many are) you may need 2 light coats or more. After you finish all the upper and lower cabs, this should have given your doors enough time to dry. If they’re not dry, wait until they are dry, turn them over and prime the front of all the doors. After all the doors are primed on both sides, and all edges, its time to re-inspect everything. Now that everything is primed, this makes inspection much better. Any small holes, cracks, and anything that you may have missed, will now show up much better. Look at everything and whatever you find that needs to be filled, this is the time to do that..After your satisfied all repairs are now done, just cover any added repairs with some primer, and your now ready to put on the finish. Your almost done with this project. Final article, step #4 will finish your new cabinets.
